Full Artwork for WAR GAMES

As promised, here's our THANK YOU for your interest in our music and texts; the complete artwork for the coming album WAR GAMES:

Click to view in full size:
The complete painting

The original has been painted on an 80cm x 70cm canvas in acrylics. It has been photographed by S. Bethke von Foto Bethke in Kassel (http://www.foto-bethke.de/).

The above version has been adapted by us; it is not in full printing quality - that would be way too huge! It has been optimized for best view on many devices.

The original photo comes as bonus item with the album - in full printing quality; 80 x 70 cm!

It really gives a damn good impression on how the painting looks when standing close to it - like myself when painting it. We hope you like it. Have fun watching and zoOMING into it! :D

Reading the Picture:

In the upper background: a blue sky. On the left, rockets race upwards. Their contrails form the word "WAR." Right next to it, the word "GAMES" is displayed, distored and green in color. Together these words form the title "WAR GAMES." The ground is covered mostly with ruins. At the right hand, a big building can be seen; with a huge roof in the shape of a hemisphere. Right next to it, hills and tall trees are denoted. Cypresses? Oaks? Well, not the kind with broad canopies, rather Quercus robur 'Fastigiata.' :D

Further in the middle ground: On the left there's a street, leading from the back to the front. It is being crossed by railways. Right next to it, there's a goods wagon. Right next to the wagon, there's a ruin with a collapsed and bent down gangway, which formerly connected the building through the air with another building on the right. On the right side, there are houses, a park, then an alley that leads from the big building with the hemispherical roof to the right side of foreground, behind some houses.

In the foreground, at the right hand side: A house ruin with a burnt-out roof and disrupted windows. In front of it, pieces of a fence and barbed wire are lying on the street. In the center of the picture, three combat robots (battle mechs) are standing. On their left arms, they wear a symbol similar to the Balkenkreuz; a thick black cross, the inner edges outlined in black, as well. The right robot is backing up, providing rear cover, though, its head is turned towards the viewer. The middle robot takes a step towards the viewer and points at him (that is "at you" :D) The left robot looks at the viewer. It holds a rifle aimed towards the left, keeping two persons in check. These two persons are kids. The one in front is holding both hands high, holding a teddy bear in the right hand. Behind, a second and smaller child is huddling up to the other kid. The taller kid in the front, wears a blouse in light rose color. The smaller kid wears a blue shirt. The clothes of both childs are dirty and torn. The kids are standing in the remains of a ruin; the roof torn apart, parts of the corrugated iron sheets laying on the right and in the foreground. The remaining pieces of the walls are holding an open steel door. Beams are laying in the ruin, and next to it, among the pieces of the roof, there are sticking smoky beams. In the lower left, on a sheet of corrugated metal sheet, the painter has left his signature: "MS" in capitals "2015."

War Games: Lyrics

Text: Michael Schreiber
Lectorate: Daniel Albrecht

We're not facing each other - man against man,
we are fighting through computers - dazed, so dazed
I'm staring on the screen - yeah, that's how we fight;
with a cig between the lips, and a joystick in the hand -

We're playing War Games,
we're but playin' fuckin' war!
We're fighting online,
tough and determined, to win the day - WIN THE DAY!

...show no mercy is our rule!
Just this one final fight...
Fast - blitz and bomb the enemy!
I don't ever - wanna lose!

We ain't no brothers, unknown in the war.
And you Joe Bloggs - mazed so mazed,
you read in the news - Hell, we're fighting there?
for the cig between your lips - and the beers on your hips.

We're playing War Games,
we're but playin' fuckin' war!
We're fighting online,
tough and determined, to win the day - WIN THE DAY!

...no more blood-stained dirty hands!
are caused online in foreign lands...
We do not hear the despaired cries,
of civilian people, who stand in our ways!

We're killing online - yes, we're fighting through the net,
well, sure it may be mean -  but not against the act;
so, please Joe Bloggs - let your moral not betray;
or should instead of a machine - yourself be blown away ?

We're playing War Games,
we're but playin' fuckin' war!
We're fighting online,
tough and determined, to win the day - WIN THE DAY!
 - And your desire for everything and much more and so FUCKIN' CHEAP!

Fair prices - blind fury!
bulk discount and - poor children!
Bio fuels and starvation;
Our welfare nation sucks foreign blood!

We're bombing far away - under magic-caps,
our viruses pervade - through every firewall.
We're fighting not for honor - nor for some dough - but
for the growth food chain - we so much adore!

We're playing War Games,
that's how we fight a war!
Who would not be glad,
that others die - and nobody cares!

Come play with us War Games,
log in, take a seat,
feel comfy - shoot, you got a new smartphone?
Neat! And so cheap, really?
Oh, gotta pay attention here, press FIRE!
Yeah, asta la vista, hahaha.

War Games: Translation (German)

Text: Michael Schreiber
Lectorate: Daniel Albrecht

liest Du in der Morgenzeitung - Ach, da kämpfen wir;

gibt's in diesem Online-Kampf...

Faire Preise - blinde Wut!
Massenware - Kinderarmut!
Biosprit und Hungersnot;
Unser Wohlstandsland trinkt fremdes Blut!

Wir töten online - ja, wir kämpfen übers Netz,
das ist vielleicht gemein -  doch gegen kein Gesetz;
also Du Du Durchschnittsbürger - tu nicht so verletzt;

machs Dir bequem - oh, hast Du n neues Smartphone?
Krasse Scheiße, so billig?

Text: Michael Schreiber
Lectorate: Daniel Albrecht
Translation: Samer Telawi

War Games: Remarks

Already 1997, we had a debate about whether the German Bundeswehr should use combat drones or not. What if such a drone, remotely controlled using a joystick, is used to kill humans? Who would be responsible - man or machine?

Back to the album

Who feels responsible?

The ethic question: Does remotely controlling a weapon lower the inhibition threshold to kill? Same as for an aircraft? Does a bomber pilot have less scruple than a foot soldier?

Back to the album

Rather having killed a human - than a machine?

Sure, it would be wonderful, if war wouldn't happen, in the first place. Until then, wouldn't it be nice if instead of humans, machines would tear each other to pieces? In Japanese, combat drone is called 無人戦闘機, literally: Without-Human-War-Machine. Doesn't that invite to think of other purposes for using combat drones than assassinating people? Could combat drones not be a step; on the way towards moving the battlefield onto the chess board - not to fight war, but playing it? Having robots fighting in an arena? RoboCup@WAR, what about that? At least until we're even tired of playing, and, finally, are capable of avoiding war at all?

More remarks under... well, REMARKS :D

Back to the album

War Games: Fair Prices - Blind Fury?

War Games is mainly about two questions. Where does the use of combat drones, stealth bombers, and cyber wars lead to? That is issued in the above sections. This section is about the question: To what extent are WE "ordinary Joes" guilty for the misery others are going through? Aren't we also "but playin' fuckin' war" - without recognizing it? Without wanting to realize it?

Back to the album

Admitting Refugees - Or Let Them Drown?

What are refugees? At first, I think of humans who cannot live freely in their homeland; who are politically persecuted - or simply do not have enough to eat, who are not able to live in a humane way, and thus flee to a different country.

The 100 Euro question: Should a country, that feels committed to human rights, grant asylum to refugees? Or rather letting them drown in the Mediterranean Sea?

The 1000 Euro question: If getting asylum helps the refugees nowadays - would that also help future refugees? Or would it rather help, if, in the future, humans would have no reason to flee, in the first place? Would we then have reached the point at which borders are needless? Would people then only leave their home land out of free will to live in a foreign country, because their beloved one lives there? Or because one can better cope with Parkinson, because of the warmer climate? Because one fell in love with the country's culture? Or out of other motivation - but not out of an emergency situation caused by other humans, which would be avoidable, such as war and exploitation?

Back to the album

Why not cure the cause - OURSELVES?

As ordinary person, I have heared that it would be our own fault! That, for example, the food markets in Africa collapsed. Thanks to the EU's agrarian price supports, food from Germany and Europe would be brought to the market at such low prices, that the local farmers don't stand a chance to compete. Cheap is ultra cool - or unfair?

I am not an expert, and I do not know, if it is correct, but it sounds terrifyingly plausible. Why do even wealthy Germans buy low-budget clothes - at best 1-Euro-T-Shirts from Bangladesh? Surely not out of evil will - I hope. Presumably, rather because the generations have experienced war and need themselves. Buying much and cheap would have become a survival strategy, in hard times· Who would not do everything for a better future, for their children? Who would not want to feed them properly each day?

It became a problem, because buying cheap became part of our culture. Is that really a problem? Let's ask a different question: If I want to earn fair money, should I not feel bound to pay fair prices? That we are not even willing to not begrudge our fellows fair wages has been proved in the course of the debate about minimum wages in Germany. They would ruin jobs! Well, if (underpaid) jobs are more important than humans, then I could understand that argument. But do we really want to be that kind of society? Do we want to live that way?

If we do not want to live that way - why do we force others to do so? Why do we urge recipients of Hartz-IV (compensation) to live and buy as cheap as possible? Is ordinary Joe not allowed to pay fair prices, and to buy good food?

Why Still Exploiting Third Countries?

Why waiting until a scandal like in Bangladesh happens - and finally the press reminds us of the problem's core? Are we not living in a well educated country - must we not feel ashamed of our behaviour, because of our history? Not only because of the Third Reich - aren't famous humanists and the German Revolution also part of our history? Of our culture? Do we trample the historical achievements under our feet? Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit - but only for Germans, and not even all Germans? Do we just play being humane - but act like "My Desire, My Desire Above All Things, Above Everything in the World?"

Sure, one cannot expect the press to report all single day that because of our life style, millions of children are working on our sport clothes for but famine wages. That because of us, humans are starving to death. That wars are being fought, which even may have been plotted by welfare nations themselves out of strategical reasons. Terrible news on a daily basis are neither a solution - nor should they be necessary; namely, if we could and would consume by heart and with good conscience. It is not only about the future of refugees - it is also about our own future; at least, that is my opinion.

The first steps have been taken by quite some people, yet, by purchasing fair trade products, organic food - or simply by making aware what consequences one's action may cause. That shows: We can change, if we want. Would it not be superb, to breaking the evil circle together, giving our weaker selves the finger, to take the plunge - changing bit by bit, day by day a bit more? Let's try - we can do it!

War Palace: Lyrics

Text: Michael Schreiber
Lectorate: Claudia and Peter Schreiber

Excluded and without perspective,
near to the gaping abyss - you don't stare into the deep,
you dare the heaven...

Come...
In our War Palace!
Here, amongst friends,
you do have a place.

In our War Palace -
there is no more exclusion,
yeah, here IS your place!

With us, you don't earn any medals, but
all of our warriors turned into martyrs,
just with us, WITH US - you feel snug and safe,
and respected - for us you'd commit murder...

Here...
In our War Palace!
Here, amongst friends,
you do have a place.

In our War Palace,
there is no more exclusion,
yeah, here IS your place!

Before we take your soul to heaven,
give us nothing more than you're God-awful life!

The last rage begins to wither, but the time is near -
let us commence it!
Your hands full with sweat, would not stop to shiver,
your soul screams despairing*, but it's way too late
to run away from death!

You stay here...
In our War Palace!
All doors are now closed - there is no escape!
You'll stay until the end: an assassin-tool, now
turn to shreds!

Not even your very last will is your own one; 'cause
not as martyr you'll see yourself in foreign eyes,
dying lonely... in desparity... ! **

*) of course, we sing "your soul's scream's despairing."
We didn't mistake an adjective for an adverb - we'd
never ever do such a thing! :-D

**) Dictionaries should list this word; it's useful,
    sad but true.

hoch hinaus...

Komm...
In unser'n Kriegspalast!
Mitten unter Freunden - hier hast
Du nen Platz.

In unser'm Kriegspalast gibt's
keine Ausgrenzung, hier hast
DU nen Platz!

Verdienen tust Du Dir bei
uns keine Orden, doch

Hier...
In unser'm Kriegspalast!
Mitten unter Freunden - hier hast
Du nen Platz.

In unser'm Kriegspalast gibt's
keine Ausgrenzung, hier hast

gibt jetzt kein Entrinnen!

Du bleibst schön hier...
In unser'm Kriegspalast! - Die
Tore sind jetzt zu - hier kommt
keiner raus! Du bleibst
bis zuletzt - ein
Attentäter-Werkzeug, dass sich
selbst zerfetzt!

Nicht einmal Dein
letzter Wille ist Dein
eigener, denn statt als Märtyrer wirst Du in
fremden Augen Dich
einsam und verzweifelt sterben seh'n.

Kriegspalast / War Palace: Remarks

Kriegspalast (War Palace) = Request to Murder?

NO!

This song's written in first person; out of the perspective of rabble-rousers, as I imagine them to be. It shall be scary and stimulating to think about:

- Why do fellow humans become assassins?
- How can I recognize extremists and their recuiting methods?
- Why do rabble-rousers succeed with their methods at all?
- How can I protect me and my fellows from falling for their line?
- To what extent are we complicit by excluding others instead offering them a helping hand?

WIR WERDEN GEH'N! (We're gonna go!)
JAWOLL FRAU KAPITAEN! (Yes Ma'am!)

From nothing comes nothing,
yeah without consumption, there's no expansion,

The best of it has an export champion,
'cause it can exploit other nations,
the commercial routes have to be secured;
of course, the military would be used.

The fatuity is of great use,
to trick 'em all who would oppose,
and if some clever president,
opens his mouth, calls a spade a spade - and stands to it -
then comes the press, and shuts his trap, properly - for the world to see.

COUGH...

Frau Kapitän's never been to war,
but herself she's a very cute... lady.
Who is not glad, that we have her,
with her, our soldiers do not get bored,
sure, they are happy, 'cause one like her,
we've had never before...

we didn't, did we?
Hm... under Schröder and Sharping we also had fun.
Would you shut up - we're talking about:

FRAU KAPITAEN!
It is a pleasure for us!
WIR WERDEN GEH'N!
Soldiers who dirty their hands for us...

It is a pleasure for us!
WIR WERDEN GEH'N! (We're gonna go!)
We are ready for a new epoch...
WE'RE GONNA GO!

JAWOLL FRAU KAPITÄN!: Remarks

Soldiers Are Murderers?

A remark from my own perspective - from Michael:

As soldier, I volunteered in a humanitarian mission in the Kosovo, the 2./KFOR. At that time, I was completely convinced of the righteousness and responsibility of our politicians; that they would not use our soldiers as cannon fodder. The previous air-to-ground strike against Serbia in the Jugoslavian civil war, in the Kosovo Verification Mission, KVM, made me think again; not because I thought it was wrong - No! Already as child, my parents and me went to Jugoslavia for holiday. Also, I had Jugoslavian friend at primary school. The news schocked me: Mass murder of the own folk! Friends on the Balkan slaughtered by the dictatorship around the Serbian leader Slobodan Milošević! How could I be against a combat mission? An air strike to help our friends? To save their lives - getting rid of a dictator, were (and are!) we Germans not also gladly receiving such help from the allies? But what did bother me: I had learned that our German constitution allows German soldiers only to take part in combat missions in case of a national defense.

Were Germans legally taking part in the KVM air strike?
Seems so, according to http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kosovokrieg#Rechtliche_Beurteilung_in_Deutschland
I don't have a primary source at hand, right now.

TODO for Frau Kapitän: Ask the Generalbundesanwalt, if the wikipedia article tells the truth.

Are Politicians Not Allowed to Make Mistakes?

Do we not allow them to stand by their mistakes - to lear from them, and to enhance themselves? Do we see our politicians as Über humans - we, who mostly not even go to vote? But more about that later...

Are We Allowed to Fight for Commerce?

The German navy got the mission to protect German freighters around the Horn of Africa from pirate attacks. At first, it may seem morally OK - but, why are the Somali not allowed to play pirates on their own coast?

How would we like it, if someday, our ships would be sunk in the North or Baltic Sea - by Somali, protecting their trade routes from German "pirates," who meanly attack Somali ships at the German front door... ?

OK, say, it would be morally justifiable - even though, I still don't understand, why our ships need to just drive there; do we need that? Is there no alternate route? Are trade routes more important to us that our soldiers? Shipping oil, smartphones, other resources and goods to Germany and the EU - is that more important than protecting our soldiers' lives and their peace of conscience!? Those, who are ready to die for us - of which we demand to risk their lives for OUR consume? Do we really wanna paly that game? Or do we not care, because there already is too much blood staining our consume? On the smartphones, 1-Euro shirts, palm oil, mineral oil - whatever we ship to the EU. Do we think: If we have a lot to answer for, already, then let's at least sacrifice some of our soldiers? Or stain their conscience, so we can have a good conscience living in cheap consume to make our own slavery more comfy? Does democracy mean, that we all are Roman senators - sending others into the arena? Are our freight ships the German answer for the Spanish Treasure Fleet? Bringing booty from the New World "safely" back home, to Europe?

Say, There is No Alternative:

Is it legal, sending our soldiers into comabt? Does our constitution (German, British, Irish, Eurpoean, ...) allow that? Is a pirate attack outside the EU a case of national defense?

And if such a clever president...

The German president Horst Köhler has mentioned in an interview, he found it OK that German soldiers were securing our trade routes - for the press a scandal! The press was so upset about his statement - than thinking about the real scandal, namely, that we indeed are sending soldiers outside our national borders to fight - not for freedom but for commerce. If one makes such a fuss about the Köhler's statement, because his opinion would not be conformable with our constitution, isn't it then even more important to ask the question if our politicians are vioalting our constitution? Köhler's statement was only secondarily an expression of opinion - it was primarily declarative; that we are sending our soldiers to fight for the commerce. The later Minister of Defense, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, could not follow that flap. For him, economic and military interests are clearly related. [1] And the press? Scandal? Uproar? Repentance? Negative.

Sympathy than scandal? Learning effect? Or simply closer to the politics than to the Volk?

At the Bundestagswahl (German parliament vote) in 2013, almost two thirds did vote.

Who voted for the administration, had indirectly voted their political course. Who voted for the opposition, made his vote invalid, or could not vote, has to respect the results. So demands the democratic order. So far so good. But what about the rest?

Who could not go to vote, has directly and immediately told the coming administration; "do as you please" - and thus also "send our soldiers to war, if you like."

Only 43% Germans attended the EU election in 2004. (www.bpb.de) Is that still democracy, if more than half of the people don't take part?

Remember: In 2008, the military Operation Atalanta (EU Naval Forces Somalia) has been started by the European Union. [2] How did they get a majority for that decision? Because of more than 50% non-voters in the EU?

Do I have to wonder, if politicians make silly decisions or even break the law - if such a great part of the German Volk / the Europeans encourage them to?

Would it not be sensible to rather encourage our fellow citizens to got vote - and at least making the vote invalid, if so unsatisfied with the politicians - than to rail against our politicians?

"50% for a change in politics" - does it not sound better than "50% are so satisfied, they even did not go to vote... ?"

Of course, this does not apply for those of us, who were not allowed to go vote. Nevertheless, those also may be Frau Kapitän together with us, if the like! Because:

We all are Frau Kapitän - 'cause we all are the EU!

Reading the Caricature

The caricature is a bonus item that comes with both, the digital album and the CD. Where? At the checkout.

Text:

In the foreground: A flip chart, and written on it: "Operation Atalanta decided?" Below, a big box for "Yes" and a small one for "No." In front of the flip chart, a man is standing. On his left arm, he wears an armband. Upon it the two capital letters "EU." He is checking the box for "Yes." Above the man, a speech bubble says: "Thus, by the majority and democraticly, the mandate is decided !"

Behind him, two other men are standing. They are grabbing each other by the scruff of their necks, pausing at the moment. The left one - in front of him a caption with the word "CONTRA" is laying on the ground - he gesticulates protestingly and stares aghast towards the man with the EU armband. The right one - in front of him a different caption with the word "PRO" is laying on the ground - he smiles contentedly.

At the right hand side, also in the foreground, two other persons are standing. They are looking at each other. One looks puzzled, giving a shrug. The speech bubble above shows but a question mark. The other answers: "No, I also don't get it..." Both are holding a caption in a hand; one person's caption reads "Not", the other person's caption reads "Entitled to Vote."

The background is separated by a balustrade. On it, a poster is displayed. It is torn in the middle. The remaining half reads: "Today: Germans to Somalia ?" In front of it on the ground is laying the other half of the poster. It reads: "Warships for the commerce !" Both halves are written double-spaced. Joining them, they read together: "Today: German Warships to Somalia ? For the commerce !" Note: In German, the words Germans and German are the same word: "Deutsche"

Behind the balustrade are two areas for the audience. Each area is filled with people's silhouettes, sitting on chairs; their bodies drawn without details, and faceless.

The left area is labeled "Non-Voters." The right one is labeled "Others."

In the right area, an ice cream seller is selling an ice to one of the spectators in the "Others" area.

In the middle, between both areas, there is a corridor, which leads to an exit in the back. Already, two persons are leaving the scene.

At the lower right, the drawer's signature is placed. It reads "MS" in capital letters, followed by "dot 2015."
