Schwing Dein Tanzebein: Lyrics (English translation)

Lyrics: Michael Schreiber
Lectorate: Kahori Chiba-Stegemann

(1. Strophe)
We knew: This day
well may be our very last;
If we, now, would leave -
it may be that we can never come home.

So leave the worry be,
at least today,
let us be happy! So:

Leave the sorrow, and
swing your dancing leg - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Yeah, swing your dancing leg - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Let's be happy, today! - HO!
 - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Yeah, swing your dancing leg,
let's be happy, today!

(2. Strophe)
How weird - despite all,
even now, the sun is shining,
and so peaceful - are glaring
the tears that unite us here -

AND THE CLOUDS THAT SOAR
FROM THE REACTOR CORE!

So leave the worry be,
at least today,
let us be happy! So:

Leave the sorrow, and
swing your dancing leg - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Yeah, swing your dancing leg - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Let's be happy, today! - HO!
 - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Yeah, swing your dancing leg,
let's be happy, today!

(3. Strophe)
The sorrow's not far,
but going-away is not for today -
If we now, go far away,
it may be that we can never come home.

EVEN UNDER GLARING SKIES
I WANT A HAPPY LIFE!

So leave the worry be,
at least today,
let us be happy! So:

Leave the sorrow, and
swing your dancing leg - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Yeah, swing your dancing leg,
let's be happy, today! - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Come, let's link arms - and swing your dancing leg!
- HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Yeah, swing your dancing leg - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Let's be happy, today! - HO!
 - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Yeah, swing your dancing leg,
let's be happy, today!

(4. Strophe)
Even though, soon, we may die...

Even though, soon, we may die,
we can have a final happy time,
'cause:

WE ARE NOT ALONE - WE HAVE OURSELVES!

This song is for all
victims of radioactivity -
We wish to you all
from our heart that you are happy -
that you nevertheless can be happy!

Schwing Dein Tanzebein: Lyrics (German)

Text: Michael Schreiber
Lectorate: Kahori Chiba-Stegemann

(1. Strophe)
Wir wussten: Dieser Tag
wird vielleicht der letzte sein;
Wenn wir jetzt fortgeh'n,
kehr'n wir wohl nie wieder heim.

Also lass das Grübeln sein -
wenigstens heute woll'n wir
glücklich sein! Also:

Lass das Grübeln sein und
Schwing Dein Tanzebein - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Ja, schwing Dein Tanzebein - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Wir woll'n heut glücklich sein! - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Ja, schwing Dein Tanzebein,
wir woll'n heut glücklich sein!

(2. Strophe)
Schon komisch, denn trotz allem
kann auch heute die Sonne scheinen;
Und so friedlich darin glänzen
die Tränen, die uns hier vereinen -

UND DIE WOLKEN, DIE AUS DEM
REAKTOR STEIGEN!

Also lass das Grübeln sein -
wenigstens heute woll'n wir
glücklich sein! Also:

Lass das Grübeln sein und
Schwing Dein Tanzebein - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Ja, schwing Dein Tanzebein - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Wir woll'n heut glücklich sein! - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Ja, schwing Dein Tanzebein,
wir woll'n heut glücklich sein!

(3. Strophe)
Der Kummer ist nicht weit -
doch wegzugehen hat bis morgen Zeit;
Wenn wir jetzt - fortgeh'n,
kehr'n wir wohl nie wieder heim...

AUCH UNTER STRAHLENDEM HIMMEL
WILL ICH GLÜCKLICH SEIN!

Also lass das Grübeln sein -
wenigstens heute woll'n wir
glücklich sein! Also:

Lass das Grübeln sein und
Schwing Dein Tanzebein - HO!
(1x nur mit Klatschen, ohne Instrumente)
- HEY!
- HO!
Ja, schwing Dein Tanzebein - WIR
WOLL'N HEUT GLÜCKLICH SEIN!
- HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Tanzebein! - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Ja, schwing Dein Tanzebein – HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Wir woll'n heut glücklich sein! - HO!
- HEY!
- HO!
Ja, schwing Dein Tanzebein,
wir woll'n heut glücklich sein!

(4. Strophe)
Auch wenn... wir bald sterben...

Auch wenn... wir bald sterben,
können wir wenigstens noch einmal
glücklich sein, denn:

WIR SIND NICHT ALLEIN WIR HABEN UNS!

Dieses Lied ist für alle
Opfer von radioaktiven Strahlen;
Wir wünschen Euch allen
von ganzem Herzen, dass Ihr glücklich seid -
dass Ihr TROTZ ALLEM GLÜCKLICH SEID!

Lyrics (Russian translation)

Michael Schreiber
Viktor Maznov

Эта песня посвещается вем жетвам радиации;

Schwing Dein Tanzebein: Remarks

Background:

A remark from my (Michael's) own perspective:

The idea came after watching the move "An einem Samstag." It is about the disaster in Tschernobyl. The officials did not inform the inhabitants until 36 hours after the catastrophe. Some residents already did know about it - yet, they decided to stay and celebrate on that very evening. Unbelievable! But it reminded me: Of moments when I did not know, if I would live the next day - still, I had no fear, because I was not alone, I had wonderful fellows around me, felt safe and secure. In 1999, as a soldier, I took part in the military mission II./KFOR in the Kosovo. We built a field hospital for the people in Prizren. Surrounded by gunshots and burning houses, still our camp was safe. The real danger were not the fights between Serbians and Kosovars. Land mines and duds / unexploded bombs were our invisible enemies. Every step on grass in the nature could mean our death. That we learned right at the first day. We had built a fence around the camp. Where we put up the fence, there were bushes and scrub. The next day, the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) squad found duds / unexploded explosives - right were we did work the day before. Nevertheless, my comrades and me felt snug - alone through companionship. We were not alone - we had us, we gave each other solace and courage. Would tomorrow come? It did not matter, we pusehd our fear aside and tried to be there for each other every day, tried to be happy. This is the experience I want to convey through the song "Schwing Dein Tanzebein." If it gives only one fellow human in Fukushima, Tschernobyl, or any other place solace, or even letting him or her forget the sorrow for 4 minutes - that would make me very happy. This is the story of the song.

11th of July 2015: Premiere in Fukushima

At Saturday, 11th of July, I (Michael) have been invited by the Japanese-German-Society in Iwaki / Fukushima / Japan to present and sing our new song "Schwing Dein Tanzebein".

Herr und Frau Kamata, Michael
Herr und Frau Kamata, Michael

Many thanks to Mr and Mrs Kamata, who did not only make that happen, but also took great care of me, and have shown me much of the region; traditional Japanese dishes, bathing culture (Onsen), and much more - we even drove through the forbidden zone, at which border the town Iwaki lies.

How Was the Presentation?

Iwaki, 11th of July 2015: Sunshine, good mood, and cool drinks :D One after another, the guests arrive, Mr. Kamata introduces us. All very kind people. Familiar and relaxed atmosphere - it could not be better. Mr. and Mrs. Kamata had everything prepared, now it would be up to me, to give my best!

Stepping behind the microphone *harrumph* I had prepared a short text, introducing myself, thanking Mr. and Mrs. Kamata and the audience, and introducing the lyrics. Since my Japanese is still at novice level, Mr. kamata kindly helped me out translating. So, the story behind the song could be told. I would sing in German, so I handed out the Japanese lyrics. Kahori Chiba-Stegemann was so kind to have the translation prepared, beforehand - many thanks!

And then it began... while singing the verses, I had my eyes closed, to experience the pictures in my head, which I had when I was writing the lyrics. At the refrain, I opened my eyes - now, let's have some fun! And the audience, finally, happily clapped their hands - what a great compliment!

Michael claps emotionally

After singing, I needed a while; it was an overwhelming experience! Mr. Kamata moderated a final question and answer period, and I am so happy to having received so many approval and encouragement.
Many thanks!
